and we proudly serve communities across Texas. Let’s go over the essentials of home insurance so you can better understand how your coverage works.

What is Home Owners Insurance?

In basic terms, homeowners insurance will protect you in theevent a disaster or an accident affects your home. It will cover the structure itself (your house) along with what’s inside (your belongings).

When it comes to what can be covered, the spectrum is really quite broad. Homeowners insurance can protect you in the case of storms, fallen trees, or other. It covers your loss from burglary and is even your personal liability protection if someone is injured on your property.

WHY DO YOU NEED HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE?

While Texas law doesn’t require homeowners to carry insurance, that doesn’t mean it’s optional in practice. Most mortgage lenders require proof of coverage, and unexpected events can happen anytime. With US TX Insurance, you gain peace of mind knowing your home and belongings are protected from life’s uncertainties.

Home insurance covers more than just weather-related losses. In the event of theft or vandalism, having the right protection is essential. The experienced agents at US TX Insurance can help you find a policy that safeguards your valuables from burglary or fire — and even recommend security upgrades to lower your premiums and give you lasting peace of mind.

For instance, according to recent national data, hundreds of thousands of homes are affected by fires each year, while severe weather events such as hurricanes, hail, and floods continue to cause billions of dollars in property damage across Texas and beyond.

Finally, your homeowners policy also includes personal liability coverage for accidents that happen on your property. This protection helps cover expenses such as medical bills, legal costs, or damages if someone is injured at your home. For example, if a guest slips during a gathering and files a claim, US TX Insurance ensures you have the protection you need.

What are the different types of homeowners insurance?

There are many different types of homeowners insurance, and talking with our agents can help you find the best plan for your needs. Here’s an abridged breakdown of four.

HOA

(Named Perils)

This basic plan covers your bases but does not include any bells and whistles. It only covers items that are specifically named. If the type of claim is not named, the claim will not be covered.

HOA +

(Expanded Version of HOA)

This expanded policy covers everything in the HOA basic plan, unless specifically excluded, plus additional Named Perils.

HO3

(National Form Open Peril)

This is the most popular homeowners insurance policy. It covers many more types of losses to your home/possessions and includes personal liability coverage. There are fewer exclusions than the HOA+ policy and the coverage amounts are higher for certain items.

HOB

(Texas form Open Peril)

This HOB is similar to the HO3 policy, they both provide coverage for your home on an Open Perils bases; but the HOB also provides additional water damage protection.

How much is homeowners insurance in Texas?

The cost of homeowners insurance may not be as high as you think. However, Texas does have slightly higher rates than other states due to increased weather damage risks. On average, the cost of home insurance in Texas is $1,945 for $200,000 dwelling coverage with a $1,000 deductible, and $100,000 liability. Of course there are a number of factors that impact home insurance rates including the size and age of your home, its proximity to the coast and any updates your house has had to electrical, plumbing or the roof.

WAYS TO SAVE ON YOUR HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE

Loyalty discount

Bundling home and auto insurance

Smart Home Devices

Home improvements (that affect safety, structure, or longevity of your home)

Going claims free for a certain amount of time

Getting an impact-resistant roof

Investing in a security system

Installing a monitored fire alarm system

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT DEDUCTIBLE OPTIONS?

There are different deductible options too. Choosing the right deductible is critical to getting the most out of your plan. Your deductible is the amount of money you have to pay out-of-pocket toward damages before your insurance will kick in. For example, say you have a $1,000 deductible and you le a claim for $10,000. Your insurance company would cover $9,000.

You can generally choose two different types of deductible plans: a percentage-based plan and a dollar-amount plan. Generally, your deductible should be as high as you can afford; the higher your deductible, the lower the cost of your premium. Of course, every situation is unique, so we’re here to help you figure out your exact costs to find the best homeowners insurance plan for your needs.

WHAT DOES HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE COVER?

As we alluded to before, homeowners insurance coverage differs depending on your plan and insurance carrier. You’ll find different options, choices, and costs depending on which insurance company you choose.

Our agents can work with you directly to explain all aspects of different carriers’ policies. We’ll provide in-depth explanations and offer tips and strategies to choose the right policy and optional additional coverages that would benefit your current situation.

CAN YOU DEDUCT HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE?

In some cases, you can get a deduction on your taxes from homeowners insurance. For example, any accidental loss (say, a neighbor drove through your garage door) must exceed 10 percent of your adjusted gross income to be considered a tax-deductible expense. There are other case-by-case situations too, so it’s best to sit down with a tax professional to talk through your options.

CAN YOU PAY HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE MONTHLY?

If your mortgage lender set up an escrow account, your homeowners insurance will likely be escrowed too. That means most people pay monthly along with their mortgage payment, but if you are responsible for your own homeowners insurance premium, we have carriers available that will offer a variety of premium payment options.

CAN HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE BE CANCELED?

You can cancel your homeowners insurance policy easily, but it’s best to work directly with your insurance agent while making sure you prevent any lapse in coverage so you avoid an unpaid claim during the time you weren’t covered. You should also notify your mortgage company when you make an insurance change. When you cancel your policy, you will receive a refund of the unused insurance premium.
